Myrtle Irene was born in the small town of Nome, Alaska. Her father was a fisherman and her mother was a homemaker. Growing up, she always loved the ocean and the creatures that lived in it. When she was sixteen, she got a job working on a crabbing boat in the Bering Sea. Irene loved the work and the adventure.
In 1982, she met and married her husband, Steve. Together, they had three children. After a few years of crabbing, the couple decided to try their hand at gold mining. They saved up their money and bought a claim in the Nome area.
